“Why can’t they get clean? Addicts never change.” Our narrative of people who have substance use disorders is deeply affected by stigma, and the stigma of addiction affects people in different ways. As a result, there are many ways in which people understand, perceive, and define stigma and its effects. In this training, participants will investigate stigma and its effect on individuals with substance use disorders, including how stigma creates barriers to healthcare and damages relationships. Then, participants will explore strategies to combat stigma in their lives.
