Family Centered Services provides resources and education to birth families to help them meet goals and reunify with their children. In this interview with an FCS supervisor, we learn more about the resources that FCS offer, recent changes to this program, and how foster parents can best partner with FCS/FSS workers.

AMP (Achieving Maximum Potential) is a youth lead advocacy program, created to give youth the platform and recourses to make their voice heard, as well as become successful individuals prepared for their future. AMP is open to any youth ages 13-23 whom have experienced an out of home placement of any kind (i.e. shelter, foster care, treatment facility, academy, etc.). AMP has 12 councils across the state of Iowa, which meet monthly. AMP also has statewide events throughout the year, both fun and educational. There are typically 5 mini-camps, 5 mini-conferences, AMP Day on the Hill, Annual AMP Camp, and so much more. Aftercare is a state-wide program for young adults who have aged out of the foster care system. This voluntary program is designed to help support young adults 18-21 navigate the transition into adulthood successfully. Participants are partnered with an advocate whom they meet with multiple times monthly and work on goals they establish to develop greater self-sufficiency. There is also some financial support provided for youth participating in services. BHIS offers support to youth that are struggling with challenging behaviors. BHIS works in partnership with therapists and families in a comfortable environment to help youth meet their goals. Watch this video to learn more about these services and how to access them.

Court Appointed Special Advocates are trained volunteers that advocate for the well being needs of children throughout the court process. The STAR program is for foster families that can provide a home to youth that are involved with the juvenile justice system. Iowa’s Citizen Foster Care Review Boards (ICFCRB or FCRB) provide independent third-party citizen review of cases in the foster care system. A total of 27 local boards meet monthly or bi-monthly to review the status of children who have been removed from their parents.
